TPU vs TPH PPF

What’s the Difference?

Not all paint protection film is created equal. We break down the two main materials — TPU and TPH – so you can make the right choice for your car.

THE BASICS

Two materials, very different results

When customers search for PPF (Paint Protection Film), they often come across two abbreviations: TPU and TPH. These refer to the base material the film is made from, and choosing between them has a real impact on protection level, durability, clarity, and long-term value.

Here is everything you need to know.

PREMIUM MATERIAL

TPU — Thermoplastic Polyurethane

The gold standard in PPF materials

TPU is a high-performance elastomer that has been used in premium protection films for decades. Its unique molecular structure enables extraordinary performance properties that set it apart from all alternatives.

MID-RANGE MATERIAL

TPH – Thermoplastic Hybrid

A cost-effective alternative with trade-offs

TPH is a newer category that blends polyurethane with other polymers to reduce cost while offering some of TPU’s benefits at an accessible price point.

MATERIAL BREAKDOWN

What are they actually made of?

TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) is a block copolymer made of alternating hard and soft segments. The soft segments give it flexibility and elasticity, while the hard segments provide structural strength. This unique molecular structure is what enables the self-healing property – minor scratches literally close themselves when exposed to heat from sunlight or warm water.

TPH (Thermoplastic Hybrid) is a blended material – typically a mix of polyurethane with polyolefin or PVC-based compounds. The hybrid nature makes it cheaper to produce, but the blended chemistry reduces some of TPU’s elite properties, particularly self-healing depth and long-term clarity.

QUALITY VARIATION

How does quality vary within each material?

Here is where it gets important: not all TPU films are equal, and not all TPH films are low quality. The material is the starting point – what separates a budget TPU from a premium one comes down to manufacturing grade and formula refinement.

What makes a TPU film premium vs budget? Key differentiators include:

For TPH films, quality varies based on the ratio of polyurethane in the blend. Higher PU content means better performance. Lower-grade TPH films lean more on cheaper fillers and typically show their limitations within 2 to 3 years.

OUR RECOMMENDATION

Which should you choose?

For premium protection – choose TPU

If you are protecting a luxury vehicle, daily driver, or any car you plan to keep long-term, TPU is the clear winner. The self-healing properties, optical clarity, and lifespan justify the cost difference many times over. Think of it as an investment, not an expense.

For budget-conscious coverage – TPH works

TPH makes sense for budget-conscious protection, short-term ownership, or secondary panels like door edges and bumpers where cost-per-panel matters. It is not inferior — it is purpose-built for a different customer.

Pro tip:

The most common mistake customers make is choosing cheap TPU over quality TPH. A lower-grade TPU film from an unknown brand can actually underperform a premium TPH product. Always ask about the brand, warranty, and film thickness — not just the material name.
