Why maintenance matters

PPF is tough — but it still needs the right care

Paint Protection Film is one of the most durable products you can put on your car. It handles stone chips, scratches, bird droppings, and UAE heat every single day without complaining. But like anything working hard in harsh conditions, it performs best and lasts longest when you give it the right care.

The good news is that PPF maintenance is not complicated. A handful of simple habits done consistently will keep your film looking crystal clear and performing properly for the full length of its warranty and well beyond. The mistakes that shorten PPF life are almost always avoidable — and most of them come down to using the wrong products or the wrong technique.

This guide covers everything you need to know, whether you have STEK film, GLITZ DEFEND, or any other quality PPF installed on your car.

Tip 1

Wash your car the right way

Washing is where most PPF damage actually happens — not from road debris, but from the wash process itself. Using the wrong technique or the wrong products on a regular basis will degrade your film far faster than the Dubai sun ever could.

The right washing technique protects your PPF from swirl marks and surface damage
  • ✓

    Use a pH-neutral car shampoo

Always use a shampoo specifically rated as pH neutral. Acidic or alkaline products attack the topcoat of your PPF over time, dulling the surface and breaking down the self-healing layer. Most quality car care brands clearly label their products as pH neutral — if it does not say so on the bottle, do not use it on PPF.

  • ✓

Use the two bucket method or a foam cannon

The two bucket method keeps your wash mitt clean between passes — one bucket for soapy water, one for rinsing the mitt. This stops you dragging dirt particles back across the film surface, which is exactly how swirl marks and fine scratches form. A foam cannon with a pressure washer is even better as it lifts dirt off the surface before you touch it.

  • ✓

Rinse thoroughly before and after washing

Always pre-rinse the car to remove loose dirt and grit before touching the surface with a mitt. After washing, rinse thoroughly to make sure no soap residue is left sitting on the film. Soap residue dries into white marks, especially in Dubai where water evaporates quickly in the heat.

  • ✗

Never use automated brush car washes

Automated brush car washes are one of the most damaging things you can do to PPF. The spinning brushes carry grit and debris from the previous car and drag it across your film at high speed. Even one visit to an automated brush wash can leave permanent swirl marks that no self-healing feature can fix. Touchless jet washes are acceptable but hand washing is always the preferred option.

Tip 2

Dry it properly — do not let it air dry

In Dubai, air drying your car after a wash is a guaranteed way to get water spots. The water evaporates almost instantly in the heat, leaving behind mineral deposits on the surface of your film. Over time these build up and become very difficult to remove without professional help.

Important in Dubai

Dubai's tap water has a high mineral content. Combined with temperatures that can exceed 40°C in summer, water left on your PPF surface will leave mineral deposits within minutes. Always dry the car immediately after rinsing — do not leave it to drip dry, even in shade.

Use a clean microfibre drying towel and blot the surface rather than wiping. Wiping in long strokes while the surface is not fully lubricated can create light scratches. Work panel by panel and dry each section quickly before moving to the next.

Pro tip

A leaf blower or dedicated car dryer is one of the best investments for PPF owners. Blowing water off the surface completely eliminates the risk of towel-induced scratches and reaches into panel gaps where water hides and then drips out later onto a dry surface.

Tip 3

Deal with bird droppings and tree sap immediately

PPF offers very good resistance to bird droppings, tree sap, and insect splatter — but that does not mean you should leave them sitting on the surface. The longer these contaminants stay on your film, the more they bond with the topcoat and the harder they become to remove cleanly.

In Dubai, bird droppings are particularly damaging in hot weather because the heat bakes them into the surface very quickly. A dropping that might take hours to cause a problem in a cooler climate can etch into a topcoat in under 30 minutes when the surface temperature is above 40°C.

Keep a detailing spray and a clean microfibre cloth in your car. As soon as you notice a dropping or sap deposit, spray it lightly to rehydrate it, leave it for 30 seconds, then blot it away gently. Never rub dry bird droppings — you will drag the dried material across the surface and create scratches.

Tip 4

Use the self-healing feature properly

One of the best features of quality PPF is the self-healing topcoat. Light scratches and swirl marks disappear on their own when the film is exposed to heat. In Dubai, this actually works in your favour — the ambient heat is often enough to trigger the healing process on its own.

How to activate self-healing

If you notice light swirl marks or fine scratches after washing, park your car in direct sunlight for 20 to 30 minutes. The surface heat will trigger the topcoat to reflow and the marks will often disappear completely. You can also use a heat gun on a low setting or pour warm water over the affected area if you want faster results.

It is worth noting that self-healing only works on surface-level marks in the topcoat layer. Deep scratches or cuts that go through the film completely will not heal. If you have damage that is not responding to heat, bring the car in and we can assess whether a section replacement is needed.

Tip 5

Use the right products — and avoid the wrong ones

Not every car care product on the market is safe for PPF. Some products that work perfectly on bare paint will damage the topcoat layer of your film. Here is a clear guide to what is safe and what to avoid.

✓ Safe to use on PPF
  • ✓ pH-neutral car shampoos
  • ✓ PPF-safe spray detailers
  • ✓ Ceramic spray boosters designed for PPF
  • ✓ Microfibre cloths and wash mitts
  • ✓ Foam cannon with a pressure washer
  • ✓ Clean soft drying towels
✗ Never use on PPF
  • ✗ Wax or sealant with petroleum distillates
  • ✗ Citrus-based or acidic cleaners
  • ✗ Abrasive polishes or cutting compounds
  • ✗ Automated brush car washes
  • ✗ Petrol or solvent-based cleaners
  • ✗ Rough sponges or abrasive pads

If you have a ceramic coating applied on top of your PPF — which we include with our GLITZ DEFEND package — you can use ceramic-safe spray boosters to refresh the hydrophobic layer between washes. This keeps the water beading effect strong and makes the film much easier to keep clean.

Tip 6

Seasonal care in the UAE — what to do before summer

Dubai summers are extreme and your PPF sees the worst of it. A simple pre-summer check and care routine makes a significant difference to how the film performs through the hottest months and how it looks when temperatures drop again in October.

  • ✓ Do a full inspection of all edges before summer — press gently along door edges and panel seams to check for any lifting. Catching a small lift early is a five-minute fix. Leaving it through summer heat will make it a much bigger problem.
  • ✓ Apply a PPF-safe ceramic spray booster before the hot season begins. This refreshes the protective layer on top of the film and makes it more resistant to the intense UV exposure coming through summer.
  • ✓ Park in shade whenever possible during peak summer months. PPF is engineered to handle UAE heat but reducing unnecessary UV exposure still extends its life. Underground parking is ideal.
  • ✓ Wash the car more frequently in summer, not less. Sandstorm residue, bird droppings and insects bake onto the surface faster when temperatures are high. A quick rinse every few days is far better than one big wash after two weeks of buildup.
  • ✓ If you notice any yellowing or haziness developing on older film, do not ignore it. This is often the topcoat beginning to break down under UV — it will not improve on its own and the sooner it is addressed the better the outcome.
Tip 7

Book a professional inspection once a year

Even with the best home care routine, an annual professional inspection is worth doing. A trained installer can spot things you will not notice — small edge lifts in hidden areas, early topcoat degradation, sections that need a detailing treatment, and any spots where the adhesive is beginning to soften.

At Glitz Car Care we offer free film health checks for all customers who had their PPF installed with us. Bring the car in, we go over it properly, and if anything needs attention we will tell you clearly what it is and what it will take to fix it. No pressure, no upselling.

For GLITZ DEFEND and STEK customers

Your warranty covers manufacturing defects including edge lifting and topcoat failure under normal conditions. To keep your warranty valid, the film must be maintained properly. Using aggressive chemicals or automated brush washes can void the warranty, so it is worth following the care guidelines from day one.
