Two different products, two different jobs

PPF and ceramic coating are often mentioned in the same breath — and often sold together. But they are fundamentally different products that protect your car in completely different ways. Understanding what each one actually does is the first step to making the right decision for your vehicle.

Physical Armour

Paint Protection Film

Thermoplastic polyurethane film, bonded to the paint surface

PPF is a physical barrier — a clear film that absorbs impact and prevents stone chips, deep scratches, and road debris from ever reaching your paint.

  • ✓ Stops stone chips & road debris
  • ✓ Self-heals minor scratches with heat
  • ✓ Protects against deep abrasions
  • ✓ Preserves paint in high-impact zones
  • ✓ Lasts 8–12 years (premium TPU grade)
Chemical Shield

Ceramic Coating

Liquid polymer that bonds chemically to the paint or PPF surface

Ceramic coating is a chemical layer — a nano-coating that bonds to the surface, repelling water, contaminants, UV rays, and light swirl marks.

  • ✓ Hydrophobic — water beads off instantly
  • ✓ Blocks UV rays & prevents oxidation
  • ✓ Resists bird droppings & tree sap
  • ✓ Enhances gloss & depth of colour
  • ✓ Lasts 3–5 years (professional grade)

What each one actually protects against

The table below shows clearly where each product excels — and where it falls short. This is what your dealer should have explained from the start.

Threat PPF Ceramic Coating
Stone chips & road debris Excellent No protection
Deep scratches Excellent Minimal
Light swirl marks Good Good
UV rays & oxidation Good Excellent
Bird droppings & chemicals Good Excellent
Water spots & contaminants Moderate Excellent
Gloss enhancement Neutral Excellent
The honest answer

PPF and ceramic coating are not competitors — they are complements. PPF handles physical threats that ceramic coating simply cannot stop. Ceramic coating handles chemical and environmental threats that PPF alone does not fully address. Together, they cover every angle of protection your car faces.

What should you choose for your situation?

The right answer depends on how you use your car, your budget, and what matters most to you. Here are the two most common customer scenarios we see.

🚗

Daily driver owner

Recommendation: PPF + Ceramic Coating

Your car faces the highest daily exposure — motorway stone chips, car park scratches, bird droppings, and constant washing. Full-front PPF with a ceramic coating on top gives you complete protection and makes maintenance far easier. The combination pays for itself in preserved resale value.

New car buyer

Recommendation: PPF + Ceramic Coating

The best time to protect a car is the day you collect it — before any damage occurs. Starting with PPF on high-impact areas and ceramic across the full car means your factory paint stays in showroom condition for years. It dramatically simplifies cleaning and protects your warranty paint finish.

Budget constraint? Prioritise PPF on the high-impact zones — bonnet, front bumper, wing mirrors, and door edges — and add ceramic coating across the full car. This gives you the best protection-to-cost ratio without compromising the areas that matter most.

Apply ceramic coating on top of PPF — not instead of it

One of the most effective combinations is applying a professional ceramic coating directly on top of your PPF film. This gives the film a hydrophobic surface that repels water and contaminants, making it easier to clean, more resistant to staining, and even better looking. Many of our clients opt for this as the definitive protection package.

Pro tip

Without ceramic on top, PPF can attract and hold water spots over time. Without PPF underneath, ceramic alone offers no defence against physical damage. The two products are designed to work together — and when correctly applied by a professional, the results are exceptional.

The key is professional installation. Both products need to be applied correctly to deliver their full performance — which is why choosing an experienced installer matters as much as choosing the right product.
